Oceans of oxygen, gone

چکیده
All animals have an effect on the environment, but some key species – called ecosystem engineers – can have a particularly large influence. Their impact can be positive, by creating and maintaining habitats and increasing biodiversity, but they can also be negative, by destroying habitats and reducing biodiversity. Interestingly, the magnitude of the effect that an ecosystem engineer has on the environment is often not a reflection of their size. Some are huge, such as elephants, which provide water for other animals during the dry season by digging up desiccated water holes until water flows. But others are tiny, such as plankton in the oceans, which influence the amount of light reaching the plants down below. In particular, the transportation of marinederived nutrients by animals is vital in shaping not only oceans but also freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. Ivan González-Bergonzoni from the Universidad de la República, Uruguay, and his international team of researchers decided to observe this phenomenon from a seabird’s perspective.

Oceanic oxygenation events in the anoxic Ediacaran ocean.
The ocean-atmosphere system is typically envisioned to have gone through a unidirectional oxygenation with significant oxygen increases in the earliest (ca. 635 Ma), middle (ca. 580 Ma), or late (ca. 560 Ma) Ediacaran Period. However, temporally discontinuous geochemical data and the patchy metazoan fossil record have been inadequate to chart the details of Ediacaran ocean oxygenation, raising ...
متن کاملThe oxygenation of the atmosphere and oceans.
The last 3.85 Gyr of Earth history have been divided into five stages. During stage 1 (3.85-2.45 Gyr ago (Ga)) the atmosphere was largely or entirely anoxic, as were the oceans, with the possible exception of oxygen oases in the shallow oceans. During stage 2 (2.45-1.85 Ga) atmospheric oxygen levels rose to values estimated to have been between 0.02 and 0.04 atm. The shallow oceans became mildl...
متن کاملIs AOU a good measure of respiration in the oceans?
[1] Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) is widely used to infer respiration in the oceans by assuming that surface oxygen concentration is close to saturation with the overlying atmosphere. However, significant disequilibrium of oxygen has been observed in high latitude surface oceans where the deep waters are formed. We explicitly calculate True Oxygen Utilization (TOU) in a global ocean physica...
متن کاملIsotope composition and volume of Earth's early oceans.
Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of Earth's seawater are controlled by volatile fluxes among mantle, lithospheric (oceanic and continental crust), and atmospheric reservoirs. Throughout geologic time the oxygen mass budget was likely conserved within these Earth system reservoirs, but hydrogen's was not, as it can escape to space. Isotopic properties of serpentine from the approximately...
متن کاملMolybdenum isotope evidence for widespread anoxia in mid-Proterozoic oceans.
How much dissolved oxygen was present in the mid-Proterozoic oceans between 1.8 and 1.0 billion years ago is debated vigorously. One model argues for oxygenation of the oceans soon after the initial rise of atmospheric oxygen approximately 2.3 billion years ago. Recent evidence for H(2)S in some mid-Proterozoic marine basins suggests, however, that the deep ocean remained anoxic until much late...
